The Bloody Ballot: Fear Street’s Prom Queen Delivers a Killer Twist

Prom season is supposed to be about corsages, awkward dances, and glittering tiaras—not bloodstains and body bags. But in Fear Street: Prom Queen (2025), Shadyside High once again proves it’s the deadliest small town in horror history. Based on R.L. Stine's unsettling 1992 novel, this film takes teen slasher horror back to its classic roots. Adding a modern twist—and it does not disappoint.

The premise is deceptively simple: five girls are nominated for prom queen, but someone obviously does not want them to make it to coronation night. As the prom court begins to die one by one in gory, stylized killings, the film quickly establishes a sense of suspense and anxiety. Mean Girls meets Scream, drenched in blood and served with a dish of '90s nostalgia.

What really distinguishes this film is its balance of camp and cruelty. There's a knowing wink at the audience. It is a high school horror film, but it's witty, self-aware, and full of genuine suspense. Each death is executed with style, and while you may predict who the killer is early on, the film manages to throw in a few surprises that keep you guessing.

The characters are more than just scream fodder. Lizzie McVee, our protagonist, is relatable and resourceful, slowly uncovering a legacy of past grudges and buried secrets. Her evolution from outsider to fierce survivor feels earned, and her chemistry with the rest of the cast—particularly the jaded goth Noah and bubbly cheerleader Kayla, adds heart to the horror.

Director Leigh Janiak returns to the Fear Street universe with the same bold visual style that made her original trilogy a hit. The lighting, set design, and pulsing synth-heavy score all contribute to a darkly glamorous atmosphere, fitting for a deadly prom night.

If you’re a fan of horror that doesn’t take itself too seriously but still lands the scares, Prom Queen is worth the watch. It’s gory fun, with just enough bite to satisfy both newcomers and hardcore Fear Street fans.
